CHARLES CITY — Those coming into the old high school gym for Charles City’s home wrestling dual against Northwest Iowa Conference rival Decorah on Thursday remarked that it brought back memories.

Most of the Comets’ indoor varsity contests now take place at “Comet Gym” located on the middle school side of the connected complex.

And when the Comets proceeded to roll over the Vikings on way to a 46-22 victory, it also brought back memories of when Charles City was a state power.

Going into the match, the Comets were ranked No. 8 among Class 2A dual teams by IAWrestle.com and No. 11 by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.

Chances are Thursday’s performance will not adversely affect future rankings.

Charles City finished the match with three-straight crowd-rousing victories starting with sophomore 220-pounder Tino Tamayo’s 16-4 major decision over Brandon Gulrud.

When sophomore heavyweight Chase Crooks following by pinning Viking Caden Keck 3 minutes, 37 seconds into their bout, it clinched the victory for the Comets as it gave them a 34-22 lead with a forfeit win waiting for them at 106.

But Charles City freshman 113-pounder Gage Kilby made sure those who stayed until the end were entertained when he stunningly turned the tables on Knute Hovden, who was leading the bout, for a fall victory at the 2:33 mark.

With two open weights ahead of them, Decorah took a 10-0 lead when starting the night with three straight victories with the varsity match commencing at the 120-pound weight class.

But then Charles City returning state qualifier Alec Staudt finally got the Comets on the board with a 44-second fall victory over Nils Holkesvik.

Ethan Peterson, another Comet freshman, recorded fall victory over Nate Rolfs in their 160-pound bout ahead of Charles City senior Elliott Sinnwell earning a 9-3 decision over Cael Gulrud at 170, and Comet junior Caden Collin recording a late takedown that was the difference in his 182-pound 3-1 decision over Elijah Mitchell.

Charles City won the previous junior varsity match (63-36) thanks in part to another impressive showing by the Comet girl wrestlers, who recorded six fall victories from Marissa Gallup (103), Kiki Connell (120), Toni Maloy (126) Lily Luft (132) and Allie Cross (152) with Gallup pinning two opponents.
