CHARLES CITY — If the Charles City YMCA swim team can somehow make a bigger “splash” at the state meet than it did last year, they’ll likely need to refill half of the Marshalltown YMCA pool.

Much of the water displacement from last year’s YMCA State Swim Meet can be attributed to Charles City swimmer Nick Litterer.

Already a multiple state champion from the state meet before, Litterer went on to set three meet records — 50 free, 200 free and 100 back — in the Boys 15-21 division.

Litterer, who earned the uncommon distinction of being a high school state qualifier in three different sports — cross country and track with Charles City; swimming with Mason City — has since graduated from the YMCA program.

But Charles City will not be bereft of representation at this year’s upcoming state meet. Ten CC YMCA swimmers have achieved the standard qualifying times during meets this winter for the state meet to take place at the aforementioned Marshalltown YMCA on March 7-8.

The “Comet” qualifiers include Mallory Cook, Matthew Du, Madison Haus, Morgan Haus, Kelsey Kane, Meghan Korbel, Ryan Kvernevig, Ryan Pavlovich, Trent Rodruck and Emma Roney.

Of the 10, Morgan Haus, Kane, Rodruck and Kvernevig are returning state qualifiers.

This year is the start of a new era for the team with physical education teacher Lisa Adams taking over as head coach.

Adams is assisted by Rhonda Schmidtke.
