CHARLES CITY — It was already a good at-bat for Tino Tamayo.

But down to the last strike and last out in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded including the tying run at third and the winning run at second … there’s always room for improvement.

Behind in the count early against Waukon reliever Carter Benzing late in the second game of Charles City’s Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader against the visiting Indians on Tuesday, Tamayo repeatedly spoiled and fouled off two-strike offerings from Benzing before finally getting a pitch he could handle, driving it into right-centerfield for a walk-off single in a 5-4 final.

The third hit of the game for Tamayo completed a second-straight DH sweep for the Comets while improving their record to 5-1 overall and in the NEIC.
Kaden Barry also had three hits in the second game for the Comets, who pounded out 11 hits overall including doubles by JJ Ritter and Atticus Parrott.

Senior Elliott Sinnwell picked up the win in relief after pitching 1 2/3rds innings, yielding no hits and no runs while striking out two.

In the previous game, Jaxon Daniels and Tait Arndt combined efforts to shutout the Indians 9-0.

Daniels started the game and was credited with the win after yielding three hits and striking out four in five innings. Arndt gave up one hit and struck out three in the remaining two innings.

Like in the latter game, Ritter had a multihit game as he was 2 for 2 including a double with 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

Parrott had two hits including an RBI double, and Cael Bohlen had two hits and 2 runs scored for the Comets, who will travel to Waverly on Friday to take on the Go-Hawks at Wartburg College’s Hertel Field.

Though the Comets’ new field on higher ground has already proven to be much more weather resistant than their former digs at Sportsmen’s Park — last Friday’s away DH against Oelwein was moved to Charles City in wake a late-night, early-morning downpour — it’s still susceptible to lightning as the first game of Tuesday’s DH was delayed a mandatory 30 minutes due to activity from a nearby stormfront that passed south of the field.
