WAVERLY — If you had to pick the Charles City at Waverly-Shell Rock Doubleheader Player of the Game(s), Go-Hawk senior Payton Leonard would be the no-brainer selection.

After shutting out the Comets in a 10-0 six-inning shortened final while striking out eight and yielding just four hits, Leonard rapped the walk-off game-winning single to win the second game 6-5 completing the Go-Hawks’ sweep.

Leonard had four hits in the second game while helping W-SR improve to 6-2 overall and 6-0 in the Northeast Iowa Conference.

While trying to salvage a split, the Comets led 4-0 and 5-2 during junctures in the second game only to have Waverly-Shell Rock rally for 2 runs in the sixth and 2 more runs in the seventh for the come-from-behind victory.

Playing in his final game for the Comets before heading out to serve in the Army National Guard, senior Elliott Sinnwell had three hits, scored a run and drove in a run.

Sinnwell also had one of the four hits against Leonard in the first game.

Unfortunately for Sinnwell, he took the loss on the mound in the second game as the Go-Hawks took advantage of several extra outs and several unearned runs given to them as well as several balls lost in the lights to Comet fielders during the nightcap.

In the second game, junior JJ Ritter had two hits including a double, junior Kaden Bary also had two hits and a double, and Jeremiah Chapman had a double, a run scored and two walks for the Comets, who fell to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the NEIC.
Charles City senior Atticus Parrott doubled in the first game and yielded 1 earned run in three innings in a starting role in the second game.

Cael Bohlen had two hits for the Comets in the first game.
