Comets place 20th out of 74 teams at Independence Girls Wrestling Tournament

With 109 team points, the Charles City girls wrestling team placed 20th out of a field of 74 at the Independence Girls Tournament on Saturday.
Senior Kiki Connell, who normally wrestles at 120 for the Comets, placed second in the G-8 bracket after losing a hard-fought tiebreaker match to North Cedar’s Ashlynn Miller in the championship bout.
The Comets had four wrestlers who placed third at the meet. They included freshman 120-pounder Lauren Staudt in the G-4 bracket; junior 126-pounder Lydia Staudt in the G-10 bracket; sophomore 120-pounder Elizabeth Oleson in the G-12 bracket; and freshman heavyweight Ava Thompson in the G-25 bracket.
Other wrestlers picking up wins and scoring points for the Comets included freshman 113-pounder Alexis Ver Meer; freshman 132-pounder Keely Collins; senior 152-pounder Allie Cross; and Katelyn Miller.
Waverly-Shell Rock won the tournament with 341.5 team points; Crestwood was runner-up (301).
* At the Hudson Wrestling Invitational also held on Saturday, Charles City’s boys team placed sixth from a field of 10 114 team points.
Junior heavyweight Chase Crooks defeated Don Bosco’s Mack Ortner in a tiebreaker in the championship match for the Comets’ lone title.
Senior 152-pounder Roush Jaeger placed second in his bracket; and senior 170-pounder Caden Collins and sophomore 182-pounder Ethan Peterson each placed third for the Comets.
Don Bosco won the meet with 248.5 points followed by West Hancock (159) and Nashua-Plainfield (139), which had 106-pounder Kendrick Huck, 113-pounder Garret Rinken and 145-pounder Mckade Munn win titles for the Huskies.
