CHARLES CITY — The Charles City girls tennis team didn’t play a match during the brief tease of summer to come that peeked its head several weeks ago.

But the Comets didn’t waste the good weather as it provided opportunities to practice outdoors in the two weeks separating their season-opener from their second match of the season.

“We mainly worked on the fundamentals,” Charles City head coach Brian Parrott said.

On Thursday, Charles City picked up its first win of the season when it defeated Osage 6-3 in a meet that consisted of single pro-set matches.

The Comets won five of the six singles matches with No. 2 Nia Litterer defeating Grace Mallory (8-1), No. 2 Heather Viers defeating Lauren Swenson (8-5), No. 3 Morgan Haus defeating Kaitlyn Olson (8-4), No. 5 Ally Faulkner defeating Kendall Olson (8-5), and No. 6 Katie Pritchard defeating Brooklyn Brock (8-3).

“For Katie (Pritchard), that was her first varsity win,” Parrott said.

The No. 2 Comets doubles team of Litterer and Faulkner defeated Mallory and Swenson (8-2).

The Green Devils’ No. 1 singles player, senior Victoria Schwarting, used her sneaky fast first serve while defeating Comet senior Kayla Kellogg (8-3), after teaming up with Kaitlyn Olson to best Kellogg and Viers in No. 1 doubles (8-2).

Kendall Olson and Brock defeated Haus and Emma Roney 8-6 to win the No. 3 doubles match for Osage’s third match win.

In junior varsity play, the Charles City doubles teams of Brittany Willadsen and Gillian Anderson; Sofia Jensen and Hannah DeVore; and Harper McInroy and Liz Olsen were all victorious.

On Monday, Charles City traveled to Decorah for its first match after the break, and lost to the Vikings’ varsity 9-0.

But the Comets brought the whole calvary — 34 players — and managed to win 12 junior varsity matches.

“That was the good news down in Decorah,” Parrott said.
