Bearcats shut out by Mustangs 2-0 in 1st round of State Softball Championships

FORT DODGE — The North Butler Bearcats were shut out by No. 1 seed Newell-Fonda 2-0 in the first round of the Class 1A bracket at the State Softball Championships on Monday.
Mustang pitcher Kierra Junger tossed a 2-hitter while striking out nine and yielding three walks in seven innings.
Bearcat sophomore starter Kiya Johnson suffered the loss after giving up four hits and 2 earned runs in six innings.
Johnson and Kenzie Groen touched Junger for the team’s only hits of the game.
The No. 8 seed Bearcats (20-6) will play Sigourney (25-9) in one of the bracket’s consolation games at 11 a.m. Tuesday (July 20).
The Mustangs (36-4) advance to the semifinals where they will face Southeast Warren (29-2) at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
