Comets go 1-2 while hosting volleyball invitational

CHARLES CITY — The Charles City Comets managed to leave their own gym with a victory during the final act of Saturday’s Charles City Volleyball Invitational.

After losing in straight games to Mason City and Decorah, the Comets defeated Iowa Falls-Alden 21-15, 21-10 to go 1-2 for the day.

Charles City is now 3-2 for the season and won’t be back in action until after Labor Day when it hosts New Hampton on Sept. 7.

In Saturday’s win against the Cadets, returning All-Northeast Iowa Conference hitter Kaylee Anderson led the Comets with six hitting kills and three blocks.

Ava Ellis was credited with two aces against IFA, and helped the Comets take a 6-0 lead in the first game with six service points to start the match.

The Comets started the morning with a 21-18, 21-10 loss to Mason City. Ava Ellis and Morgan Maloy each had eight assists, and Emma Miller and Mya Rimrod both had service aces for the Comets.

In the following 21-10, 21-13 loss to Decorah, Anya Ruzicka had five assists and Rimrod had four digs for the Comets.
