Comets 2nd at Central Girls Wrestling Invitational

ELKADER — The Charles City girls wrestling team placed second among a field of 25 at Friday’s Central Girls Invitational.
The Comets’ team point total of 173 was bested only by Decorah (197).
Charles City’s returning state champion Lilly Luft scored a team-high 27 points while going 3-0 with two falls and a major decision in claiming the 132-pound title. Luft improved her season record to 17-2.
Alexis Ver Meer was 3-0 with three fall victories while winning the 113B title and scoring 26 points for the Comets.
Kaylee Hennich compiled 24 points for the Comets while going 3-1 with three falls for a second-place showing in the 106-pound bracket.
Kylie Blunt placed second in the 138-pound bracket while going 2-1 and scoring 20 points; Elizabeth Oleson recorded 19 points while going 3-1 with three fall victories and a third-place showing in the 132-pound bracket; Alex Wright recorded a team-best four fall victories as part of her 4-1 record and a fifth-place, 17-point showing in the 126-pound bracket; Morgan Maloy and Destiny Kolheim both went 2-2 in the 152-pound bracket with respective fourth-place (13 pts.) and fifth-place (11 pts.) showings; and Katelyn Miller went 3-1 while placing fifth and scoring 10 points in the 138-pound bracket for the Comets.
* Charles City 160-pounder Kayden Blunt and 138-pounder Nathan Lopez both went undefeated for bracket titles while scoring 24 points apiece during Saturday’s Clear Lake Wrestling Invitational.
Excluding byes, Blunt went 3-0 with two falls and Lopez went 2-0 with two falls as Charles City’s two lone champions helped the Comets place fifth amid the eight-team field with 132.5 team points.
Among other wrestlers recording victories and points at Clear Lake for the Comets included the team’s resident ranked 220-pounder Tino Tamayo, who placed second in his bracket while going 1-1 and scoring 16 points; Carter Haberkorn, who placed third among 106-pounders while going 2-1 with two falls and scoring 16 points; Trevor Peterson, who placed fourth among 170-pounders while going 2-2 with two fall victories and scoring 14 points; Jordan Young, who placed fourth among 113-pounders while going 2-2 with a fall and a technical-fall victories and scoring 13.5 points; Talan Weber, who placed fourth among 145-pounders while going 2-2 with a fall and a sudden-victory win while scoring 9 points; and Dylan LaPolice, who placed fifth among 126-pounders while going 2-2 with two fall victories while scoring 10 points.
Finishing ahead of Charles City were invite champions Emmetsburg (220), Algona (208), North Butler-Clarksville (166) and Okoboji/HMS (142).
Rounding out the field were Forest City (122.5), Clear Lake (75) and West Fork (41.5).
The third-place NBC Bearcats boasted three bracket champions, including two-time state heavyweight champion Chet Buss, who improved to 25-0 with a pair of fall victories.
Tanner Arjes (126) and MaKade Bloker (170) were the Bearcats’ other invite champions.
