NP Huskies 2nd at Hudson Wrestling Invitational

HUDSON — An undermanned Charles City wrestling team placed eighth out of eight teams at Saturday’s Hudson Wrestling Invitational held at Hudson Elementary School.

With only eight wrestlers, the Comets compiled 65.5 team points.

Meet champion Don Bosco had 232 team points followed by runner-up Nashua-Plainfield (202), West Hancock (165), Hudson (128.5), Columbus Catholic (106), Jesup (102) and North Fayette Valley (71).

Charles City senior Tino Tamayo placed second in the 220-pound bracket. Tamayo (15-4) faced West Hancock senior Matthew Francis in the championship match. Currently ranked as the No. 1 Class 1A 220-pounder according to Hupke Wrestling Productions, Francis recorded a fall victory in the second period while improving his record to 32-0.

Tamayo’s placing earned his team 18 points.

Trevor Peterson also secured 18 points for the Comets with a third-place showing in the 170 pound bracket.

Nathan Lopez’s fourth-place showing at 138 was good for 13.5 points, and Kayden Blunt’s fourth-place showing at 160 was good for 13 points for the Comets.

The runner-up Huskies boasted three champions at the Hudson Invite.

Garrett Rinken went 2-0 while winning the 120-pound bracket and improving his perfect record to 34-0.

Jayden Rinken went 2-0 while winning the 106-pound bracket and improving his near-perfect record to 34-1.

While going 3-0 over the weekend, Mckade Munn (34-4) won the 152-pound bracket.

Nashua-Plainfield also had a pair of runners-up: Kendrick Huck (126) and Trey Nelson (138).
