Weekly Word: Navigating the blizzards

Anybody agree with me that this winter has been crazy?

We have experienced so many different winter warnings. In January we experienced a Wind Chill Warning as we hit temperatures that felt like negative 50 and below. In February we have had Winter Storm Warning after Winter Storm Warning as we got inch after inch of snow.

Then we were hit with possibly the biggest one to date this last weekend. We experienced a Blizzard Warning. Roads were closed. Travel was basically banned. It shut down much of Iowa.

One of the things that was interesting to see from this weekend included the videos from the blowing snow. In most cases you were lucky to be able to see a couple feet in front of you. It was both fascinating and terrifying all in the same breath.

Thinking back on this, I could not help but see the correlation to life. So often we can barely see the next step. We look up only to struggle to focus. The danger is real, yet we would not be able to decipher our next step.

What do you do? We turn to the one true thing — God’s Word.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

Life can be a metaphorical blizzard. What is truth? What is my next step? What should I do? How should I live my life? Questions arise at every corner. The world is a confusing place.

Through it all, one thing stands solid and steady — God’s Word. In a world that struggles to lay out absolutes, this is the one thing that is absolute. It comes from God and is given to us to teach, guide and grow us.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

So, in the blizzards and in the calm times, look to God’s Word. Jesus will speak to you. He will guide your steps. He will grow you. It is the one thing we can totally depend upon.

Prayer

Father God. I thank you for your Word. It is solid and true. I am grateful that I can trust it and depend upon it. My life can feel crazy and hectic. I can be confused at other times. But I know that I can trust you and what you have said. Help me to continually look into your Word for guidance and growth every day. Amen!
