THE WEEKLY WORD: Overcomers

By Pastor Paul Phillips, Gospel Lighthouse Church, Floyd

How do we react when outrageously mean things are done to us? Maybe someone hurls insults at us or lies about us. What is our response when we are misjudged?

Our first reaction is usually a natural one. We might be angry or hurt. After a little time passes, we may become bitter and think of some way to retaliate.

What does the Bible tell us to do in these situations?

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. — Romans 12:21

We don’t have to be overcome by evil. We can overcome the flesh and Satan through the power of the Holy Spirit. How many times have we been convicted of our reactions in difficult encounters?

The Scripture teaches believers to walk the “Love Way.”

Jesus said, “Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who despitefully use you.”

He also said, “If someone asks for your coat, give them your scarf, too.”

Jesus is asking a lot, isn’t He?

The Bible teaches we are to model our faith and conduct after Him. We are to act like He acts. What would happen if we acted like Jesus during the stressful encounters in our lives?

Ephesians 5:1 instructs us to  be constantly in the process of becoming more like the Lord, making it our aim to act like Him, to duplicate Him, and to exactly copy Him in every area of our life.

I know some may feel this is impossible to act like Jesus. I have felt that way myself, but the apostle Paul teaches us to make it our aim.

Shooting an arrow at a target doesn’t mean you always hit a bullseye, but you can get closer with practice. Let it be our aim to become more like Jesus.
