Area runners to compete at state cross country meet Saturday in Fort Dodge

Two Charles City runners and one RRMR runner will be representing the Comets and Warriors on Saturday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge at the 2015 State Cross Country meet.

Junior McKayla Cole will vie for a top three finish at the state meet. The Comet was the NEIC champion and district champion last week at Decorah. Cole said last week after the race that she’ll need to cut back on sever workouts and eat right in order to accomplish her goal of a top three finish.

Junior Gavin Connell will represent the boys’ on Saturday. Connell, who put in more than 500 miles in the offseason, had his goal of making it to state, pay off last week at districts.

For the Warriors, newcomer Sheridan LaCoste became the first female athlete in school history to qualify for the state meet and first athlete since 2008 to be running on Saturday. LaCoste was a state athlete in track and field last spring and said she’s really enjoyed this season, wishing she had even gone out last year.

No. 7 Comets set to face Ballard in second round of regional volleyball

After finishing in the top 10 final polls in the final release of the season, the No. 7 Comets will be hosting Ballard tonight at 7 p.m. The winner will go on to face the winner of Waverly-Shell Rock and Boone, next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Nashua. The winner of that game will head to the state tournament.

Huskies survive, advance to Manly

In a four-set thriller with conference foe Central Springs on Tuesday night, the Nashua-Plainfield team will be squaring up against Lake Mills on Friday in Manly. The Huskies cruised in the three sets they did win Tuesday, and will be tweaking offensive errors during practice this week. That match begins at 7 p.m. Friday.
