Dubuque library developing detection procedures for bedbugs

DUBUQUE (AP) — The Dubuque library is developing detection procedures in order to avoid more bedbug infestations.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that returned library items will be checked and weekly inspections of library furniture will continue.

In October the library disposed of two couches and hundreds of newspapers and closed a small section of the library for a week after staffers found bedbugs in a reading area. The area has since been professionally treated with chemicals and steam.

Library director Susan Henricks says a bedbug-sniffing dog will be brought in next week.

The tiny insects and their eggs can hide in the spines of hardcover books and can be unwittingly transported by library users.

Bedbugs feed on human blood and leave itchy, red welts.
