Bearcat wrestling takes second place in Ogden

Week off will provide time to shore up weak spots on mats

A 3-2 team record down south during the weekend got the Bearcats a second place finish at the Ogden Dual Tournament on Saturday.

The Bearcats fell in the championship dual to Humbolt, a 48-30 defeat.

Head coach Gordy Smith said he’s very happy with where his team is at this season.

“Our lineup has been pretty solid so far this season,” Smith said. “We competed really well and we’re happy to come away with second place; we’re happy with where we’re at.”

Smith said the early season success has a lot to do with the chemistry among underclassmen and upperclassmen

wrestlers. Smith said the veteran wrestlers who have been with the team for three of four years have stepped up to show the younger guys how it’s done.

Although Smith is comfortable with how the team has performed thus far, he said there’s still work to be done.

“We’ve got to get better on bottom. We’re getting ridden for too long,” Smith said. “We’ve got to learn to get out quicker.”

With an entire week off from any live action, the Bearcats will be working on just that in practice this week.

Smith said while there’s some time to recuperate and rest, North Butler will also be working on shoring up the little things to perfect getting a few more wins.

The Bearcats’ next contest won’t be until Dec. 19 when the team heads to Iowa Falls. That meet begins at 10 a.m.
