CLARKSVILLE — It took a while for the Rockford Lady Warriors to get rolling. But once they did, it seemed as if their season-opening night got shorter and shorter.
On the road against Clarksville, Rockford traded leads with the Indians for much of the first set before pulling away and winning 25-19 after an extended rally resulted in the winning point.
The second set was also close before Rockford junior Marissa Norby served up three aces in a row and seven-straight service points on way to a 25-16 victory.
The third set was all Rockford, 25-8, which completed the sweep.
“We came out flat in the first set before our servers help build our momentum,” Rockford head coach Maggie Pruin said. “It’s nice to finish strong, but we’ve got to start out a little better and keep it going from there.
“We don’t want to put ourselves hole early.”
MacKenzie Rooney was 9-of-9 serving and had 12 kills; Skylar Schmitt was 17-of-17 serving with four kills; and Theresa Jones was 9-of-9 serving with 23 assists for Rockford, who will travel to Nashua-Plainfield on Thursday to take on the defending Top of Iowa-East Conference champion Huskies.
