Charles City man arrested in connection to gravesite thefts

1:50 p.m. — Charles City police have arrested a man in connection to the theft of graveside items at Riverside Cemetery, police said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

Terry Brandt, 43, of Charles City, was arrested and charged with two counts of fifth degree theft, and one count of possession of stolen property on Thursday afternoon. Other charges are pending, police reported.

Brandt was identified by community members on social media after he was photographed on camera taking Christmas lights from a Riverside Cemetery grave. Stolen items were recovered at residences on Ferguson Street, Hulin Street and North Jackson Street.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Family members who believe items are missing from graves are asked to contact Captain Brandon Franke at the Charles City Police department, at 641-228-3366, and describe the item that is missing.

THURSDAY – The Charles City Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying an individual from security photos at a local gravesite.

A man in jeans, a blue jacket and a dark-colored baseball cap was photographed removing items from a gravesite, police reported in a Facebook post on Thursday morning. Those with information on his identity are asked to call Officer Bilharz at 641-228-3366.
