A Charles City Middle School teacher raised $480 with the largest group of supporters during Saturday’s Dash for Cash at the Waterloo Black Hawks hockey game.

Sixth-grade instructor Angela Willey collected $227 from the ice, and earned an extra $100 from the Black Hawks for bringing the largest group of school supporters with her. Fifty-one people purchased tickets to support the Charles City Middle School at Saturday’s hockey game, raising another $153 donated to the school.

Out of ten teachers who competed in the Dash for Cash, Willey, representing the Charles City Middle School, traveled the furthest to compete, Black Hawks Vice President Joe Greene said.

“It’s very impressive the support that Ms. Willey received considering the distance,” Greene said. “It said a lot about her support and her school, colleagues and peers that they would make the trip and travel that far. She should be very proud.”

Willey and other area teachers competed during intermission at Saturday’s home game against the Fargo Force, from Fargo, North Dakota. Each of the teachers collected between $180 to $346 in single dollar bills during the fundraiser’s main event.

Although the visiting Force took home a 5-3 win against the Black Hawks at Young Arena, more than 2,585 audience members raised $3,068 for area schools that took part.

“More than anything, the teachers had a blast,” Greene said. “Once they got together and had a chance to visit, they felt like they had something in common … ‘We’re doing it for a great cause.’ We hope to do it again next year.”

Funds raised by Willey and Charles City audience members will be donated to the sixth-grade after-school program started by Willey and her colleagues, and to the Charles City Middle School.
