When the Casey’s General Store on Gilbert Street closes next month it will leave only one Casey’s store in Charles City. But those two store locations aren’t the only property the company owns here.

As the Press reported previously, Casey’s announced recently that the store at 1007 Gilbert St. will close permanently at the end of its regular hours Sunday, Feb. 4.

Samuel Knezevic, financial analyst for Casey’s General Stores Inc. in Ankeny, told the Press the decision to close the store “was made following a routine strategic evaluation we performed to consider the needs of all the communities we operate in.”

He noted that the company’s other store at 1105 Blunt St. will remain open and was expanded between 2012 and 2014 to incorporate a full line of prepared foods and grocery products “consistent with the company’s largest and most-recently built stores.”

“We felt the expansion of that store was the best way to serve the community and it ultimately lessened the need for the second store,” Knezevic said.

“The Gilbert Street property will likely be listed for sale after we close the store, though I do not have a time frame for when this will take place,” he said.

Casey’s also owns property by the Avenue of the Saints intersection with South Grand Avenue in the south part of Charles City.

Casey’s Marketing Co. of Ankeny paid $300,000 in October 2013 for the property on the northeast corner of the intersection, according to Floyd County records.

It is listed as 4.04 acres of vacant lot, and was purchased from the White Family Limited Partnership.

When asked about that property, Knezevic said, “We do not have any plans for future development in Charles City at this time.”

In its 2017 annual report, Casey’s President and CEO Terry Handley noted that the year had been “difficult” for Casey’s as well as “the broader convenience, grocery and food service industries.”

Still, he said, the company plans to continue increasing the number of new store constructions and acquisitions.

“During fiscal 2017 the company completed 48 new store constructions, including our first store in the state of Ohio, and acquired 22 stores,” he said.

“The company had 27 new stores under construction, 116 sites under agreement for new store constructions, and five acquisition stores under agreement to purchase at the end of fiscal 2017, Handley said in the annual report.
