Classic Cleaners is moving from Main Street to North Grand Avenue.

The business has moved to R.M. Granet and Co.’s former spot at 1110 N. Grand Ave.

R.M. Granet will remain in the building and move to the side.

Nancy Vance and Holly Timmons are the Classic Cleaners co-managers and have been for about 14 years.

“We opened up here on April 2,” Vance said. “As of now we don’t have all of our machines hooked up yet, but we hope to get back this week to where we were over there.”

Classic Cleaners was affiliated with the cleaners of the same name in Waverly, but that building had a fire on Dec. 27.

“It pretty much destroyed the building,” Vance said.

After announcing their closing, scheduled for Jan. 15, Charley Thomson intervened and bought the business.

“He’s the reason we’re here,” Timmons said. “He was making phone calls and kept us in business.”

“It was kind of a last-minute thing,” Vance said. “We had announced that we were closing on Jan. 15 and Charley came in to pick up his shirts, and he said, ‘What? You’re closing,’ he said.”

Thomson couldn’t allow that and stepped in, Vance said.

“There’s a significant demand for this,” Thomson said. “With Waverly gone, they didn’t have anywhere else to do the cleaning, so I found a new place to do the cleaning, and they were losing their lease anyway.”

The landlord wants to sell the building where Classic Cleaners was located.

“Charley already owned this building, so he moved it down here,” Vance said. “Charley wants to get us to the point where we will be able to do the dry cleaning here, as well as the shirts.”

The move has gone smoothly for Vance and Timmons, though it was overwhelming at first.

“People are finding us pretty good,” Vance said. “Now we’re starting to see things come together.”

Classic Cleaners also has a seamstress that comes in on Saturdays from Waverly.

“She does alterations and seam repairs, patches — she’s very good,” Vance said.

“We’re open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on Saturday we’re open from 8 a.m. until noon,” Vance said.

“We’re keeping the same hours,” Timmons said. “We’re getting it together, piece by piece.”
