Giving back and helping out in the community are just a few of the positive contributions The Elks are able to achieve.

The local Elks Lodge No. 418 in Charles City held its annual youth banquet on Wednesday night and many standouts in various fields were in attendance to receive trophies and scholarships.

The Elks’ youth banquet coordinator, Shawn Hyde, talked about the importance of the organization. The youth banquet is just one of many events that allow the fraternal order to contribute and recognize positive accomplishments in the area, he said.

“We’re more involved than people realize,” said Hyde, who has been an Elks member for around five years. “It’s a lot more than what you can do as a person. It’s about what you can do as a group and that group is the United States.”

The night’s featured speakers were husband and wife Ryan and Maddie Fank. Ryan is the Charles City High School head wrestling coach and Maddie is the head coach of the Comet varsity volleyball program.

Also in attendance was  Elks state President-elect Bill Berger, who addressed the crowd in attendance with some closing remarks.

Three boys and three girls won Elks scholarships. They were Joel Carlson, Carter West, Kaelyn Ambrose, Rachel Grober, Derek LaBarge, Theo Arndt and Morgan Fritz.

Jade Pringnitz, Noah Hollister and Kylie Vollbrecht all won Elks state vocational scholarships.
