Charles City second-graders share letters to Santa

Christmas letters to Santa from Charles City public school second-graders run the gamut from the ambitious (“a million dollars and a diamond watch”) to the poignant (“I want a dog, candy and to see my mom”).

Some cause a chuckle and others pull at the heartstrings.

Some are well thought-out — “I want a cat. I want my mom to not be allergic to cats.”

Some ask for a level of service that Santa may not be able to provide — “I want a foot massage.”

Some go all out — “I want a girlfriend,” but also leave Santa options — “Can I get gum?”

Some are sophisticated — “I would like some books because I like to read and I want Starbucks because I think it is delish.”

Some know they can’t fool Santa. While many assure him they’ve been very good all year, one just laid it out there  — “I have been OK this year.” Another offered — “I try my best.”

Some include a helpful warning — “I might be sleeping under the tree. So excited!”

Some recognize the problems Santa may have carrying large items — “I want a one hundred dollar itunes gift card for my ipad (and) a one hundred dollar XBox gift card and one hundred dollars.”

Some are all-inclusive — “This year I want everything an 8 year old boy could want.”

And some puzzling — “I want a stuffed reindeer.” (We hope he means a toy.)

And one understands the true spirit of Christmas — “You will be so happy. I have your Christmas present. You gave me a present so it is your turn.”

The letters have the typical misspellings and punctuation gaffs that new writers fall victim to, but all are heartfelt and show the hope and optimism of that age at this time of year.

We’re publishing the letters from Washington second-graders in a special section inside today’s paper so Santa can cross-check his list and make sure he has the latest information. (Of course, Santa reads the Press.)
