A winter storm warning with the possibility of significant snowfall is in effect Friday afternoon through Saturday morning in Floyd and other area counties in northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.

Snow will begin after noon Friday, turning to heavy snow with accumulations of 6 to 9 inches possible in the Charles City area, according to the National Weather Service.

The winter storm warning is in effect noon Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday from Floyd and Mitchell counties east to the Iowa border. Very difficult travel conditions are likely.

Current forecasts show Charles City in the band of possible heaviest snow with this storm system.

Wind from 10 to 14 mph will cause drifting snow which is expected to keep roads snow-covered into Saturday morning. Total accumulation of 9 or more inches is possible in some areas.

Much colder weather moves in Friday night, with a low of 10 and a wind chill as low as minus 4. Bitterly cold wind chills of 5 below to 15 below are expected Sunday morning and Monday morning.

Light snow is possible beginning Sunday morning and running through Tuesday, and again later next week.
