Cabin Fever Weekend features plenty of exciting things to do and see

Lace up the skates or slip on your snow boots.

There will be plenty of opportunities to beat the winter doldrums during Cabin Fever Weekend from Friday to Sunday, January 25-27, in the Charles City area.

The Charles City Chamber of Commerce helps organize this annual event, which features a wide list of things to take part in for people of all ages and interests.

“It’s a great chance to get out and try something different,” said Emily Gardner, events coordinator for Charles City.

You can catch a Sunday matinee at the Charles Theatre. Or can knock down some pins at Comet Bowl, or take a nature hike in what’s likely to be a winter wonderland at Cedar Springs Camp and Retreat.

Other events include ice skating, roller skating, snow tubing, bingo — even a soup supper to warm up after perhaps a day outside.

“Maybe this is the year that you go on a nature walk or try a game day inside,” Garden said. “Look at the schedule a little bit closer. Set an intention and say, ‘I’m going to go to one of these things. I’m going to support this community event.”

The Cabin Fever Weekend has in years past featured more outdoor activities such as ice fishing, dog sledding and cross country skiing. The warmer-than-usual temps and mild winter thus far have altered the schedule a tad, according to Garden, but with the expected winter storm this weekend and very cold temperatures, events can be added right up until next Friday when the weekend kickoffs off.

“Each year the weather affects it,” said Garden.

Charles City High School sports fans won’t be left out in the cold, as the girl/boy varsity doubleheader basketball game against Oelwein will take place on Friday night at the Comet Gym. The following day, Comet Gym will host the Northeast Iowa Conference wrestling meet, which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Charles City YMCA will host whiteout roller skating once again this year on Friday.

“They just encourage people to dress in all white and then it looks like a blizzard,” Garden said.

The Charles City Public Library will host an escape room geared for kids in the first through third grades from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Groups of five or fewer will try to solve puzzles that will lead them to a treasure of candy and escape the children’s room. Pre-registration is required for that event.

Also Saturday, the Charles City Senior Center will hold Family Bingo Night. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bingo gets under way at 6 p.m. All ages are welcome and children must be accompanied by an adult. They’ll be free root beer floats and popcorn, as well as special game packages and jackpots.

The Charles City Rotary Club will have a public soup supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge, featuring five different kinds of soup, relishes and homemade pie. Valet parking will be available, and the lodge bar will be open. Proceeds will go toward club projects including the “Breath of Fresh Air” campaign to provide carbon monoxide detectors to the community.

The Fossil and Prairie Center in Rockford will hold a Bird Feeder Palooza at 5 p.m Sunday. The cost is $5 and participants can learn how to construct and build a bird feeder.

Game Day will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church on Sunday. Games that will be played are 500 and Dominoes.

It’s a “Penny a Pin” bowling at Comet Bowl as well on Sunday. Whatever that person rolls is the price they pay for a game. So if somebody bowls a 179, for example, the price for that game would be $1.79. Anybody who bowls a 200 or better gets that game free.

Cedar Springs Camp and Retreat in Floyd will let guests go on a hiking/nature walk as well as take part in ice skating. There will also be snow tubes for kids and adults to have fun on. Refreshments will be served in the dining hall and folks can warm up next to the fireplace inside.
