Closings and cancellations

Many area events and meetings have been called off for Wednesday and/or Thursday, and some businesses — including the Post Office — have announced they will be closed or will curtail activities.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday afternoon that there would be no mail delivery in Iowa, Minnesota, western Wisconsin and western Illinois on Wednesday because of the dangerously cold weather forecast.

This includes no mail pickup from businesses or collection boxes, and no package delivery and pickup services.

Local post office operations will continue, but could be limited, the USPS said.

The Press will print a Wednesday edition that will be available at the Press office and at the usual locations where it is sold and that are open Wednesday, but for mail delivery subscribers, the Wednesday and Thursday Press will be delivered Thursday.

The National Weather Service said dangerous, record-breaking cold will persist into Thursday. A wind chill warning is in effect through Thursday for wind chills from minus 40 to minus 60 at times.

Other area closings, cancellations and postponements:

• Charles City Chamber, Revitalization and Area Development Corp. offices will be closing at 3 p.m. Wednesday and opening at noon Thursday.

• Charles City schools: No classes or activities Wednesday.

• Floyd County Museum will be closed Wednesday.

• The Charles Theatre will be closed Wednesday evening.

• First Security Bank offices in Aredale, Ionia, Marble Rock and Rudd will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. All other offices will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Video Teller and Drive-thru ATM open 7-7.

• Otto’s Oasis is closed Wednesday.

• The Mitchell County Courthouse will be closed Wednesday.

• The Charles City Broadband Telecommunications meeting scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed.

• The Wentlands Woods timber sale meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed.
