The Iowa Better Newspaper Contest is an annual competition that daily and weekly newspapers in various circulation classes can enter in news, sports, photography, design, advertising and other categories. The 2018 award winners, announced Feb. 8 at the INA convention in Des Moines, were selected by judges from the Indiana Press Association.

The judges described Burbridge’s sports column entries as “topical columns that use a variety of references and quotes that help support his case.”

The three columns Burbridge entered were titled “Hitters should be able to stand their ground,” “‘Celebrate your victories’ the best advice an athlete can get,” and “One-and-done sometimes makes it fun, even in the MLB postseason.”

Also at the convention, Thomas Nelson, a former Press reporter/photographer, won a first-place award for a photo taken at a fire while Nelson worked for the Press. Nelson is now a reporter for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
