The Charles City Middle School team of Anders Haglund, Zadie Pittman, Jayden Poyner, Jameson Mayhew and Ellie Gassman was the first team from Charles City to compete at the Iowa Science Bowl.

The team competed Saturday in Ames in the 2019 Ames Laboratory Regional Middle School Science Bowl.

After morning competition rounds, the Charles City team was in the top half of competing teams, which earned it a spot in the double-elimination tournament in the afternoon. After beating Waukee, the Comet team faced some strong competition, including the team from Ames which took fourth place at nationals last year.

A team from Stilwell Middle School in West Des Moines claimed the championship, and will represent Iowa in the National Science Bowl April 25-29 in Washington, D.C. The defending Iowa champion Ames team placed second and the Pella team captured third.

The Charles City students said they were excited to compete again next year.
