The Marble Rock Lions Club is holding a benefit this month to help the grandson of a longtime community couple.

The club will hold a “Vegas Night” fundraiser beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at the community center in Marble Rock.

The benefit is for Ben Neal of Forest City, the grandson of longtime residents and community supporters Ron and Bonnie Schriever, according to information from the Lions CLub.

“Ben has been diagnosed with Stage 2 esophageal adenocarcinoma and is one of the youngest individuals on record to have this form of cancer,” the club said.

Neal has been receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday to have the tumor removed, to be followed by six months of bi-monthly chemotherapy treatments.

Neal played football at Waldorf University in Forest City before transferring to the University of Northern Iowa. He has established his own landscaping business in northeast Iowa and is a firefighter with the Forest City Fire Department.

The event March 16 will include a prime rib dinner and casino games; a live auction of prints, memorabilia and other items; raffles; and a bake sale.
