CCMS play ‘The Secret Garden’ to be presented this weekend

Thursday’s dress rehearsal of the Charles City Middle School play, “The Secret Garden,” was well-received by the group of elementary students who attended.
The production, directed by Marie Conklin, was originally scheduled to be presented on March 8-9, heading into spring break, which is the typical date for the CCMS play. Due to all the missed days due to weather, however, the production was pushed back to this weekend.
The performances will be at the North Grand Building, starting at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The play “The Secret Garden” is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It’s a story that’s familiar to a lot of young readers, about Mary Lennox, a sullen and spoiled young orphan, who is sent to live with her brooding uncle at gloomy Misselthwaite Manor.
Discovering a hidden, neglected garden, Mary plants the seeds of new life for all those drawn into her secret refuge.
The cast features more than 30 students, and some lead characters include Teagan Prigge in the role of Mary, Anders Haglund as Dickon, Breyer Ellison as Colin, Harper McInroy as Mrs. Medlock, Lancy Shivers as Archibald Craven, and Larry Stokes as Dr. Craven.
“They have been doing such a great job,” Conklin said. “Most of them have British accents. They’ve been working very hard on just developing their characters.”
Conklin said she believes the local audience will get to see a fine show — and that waiting an extra two weeks for the production will be worth it.
