Lynch to retire as Floyd County sheriff

Floyd County Rick Lynch announced today that he will not seek re-election and had decided to retire from law enforcement on Dec. 31, 2016.

He has served Floyd County for 24 1/2 years with 18 1/2 as sheriff and says he is “excited to start his second career working with the intellectually disabled,” a news release said.

Lynch began his law enforcement career in 1992 as a full-time dispatcher for the Floyd County Communications Center and a Floyd County Sheriff reserve. He became a deputy in 1993

When Bill Cavanaugh retired mid-term in 1998, Lynch was appointed interim sheriff by the Board of Supervisors and went on to win the special election that November and was subsequently re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012.
