Iowa Senator-elect Waylon Brown toured Charles City’s new middle school on Monday evening, introducing himself to Superintendent Dr. Dan Cox and Charles City Board of Education members before their regular meeting.

It was Brown’s first time touring the new school.

“I think they did a great job at capturing the reality that our kids don’t learn the way they used to,” Brown said following Monday’s meeting.

“And they’ve really incorporated a lot of nice, open spaces that are going to benefit going forward,” he added.

Other schools within Brown’s senate district are considering similar changes within their schools, Brown said, adding that the Charles City school is an opportunity to see those potential changes in action.

“I think they did a really good job with their new facility here,” he said.

“It’s my hopes that as we go down to session, more people keep in mind that this is what we need to advance on as far as building good relationships with our school boards and the community members.”

Brown is a St. Ansgar High School graduate. He owns and operates Waylon Brown Construction and also farms. He has served on the St. Ansgar Planning and Zoning Board.

He and his wife, Julie, have two 8-year-old children.
