embers of the vocal jazz ensemble Rhymes with Orange had a sweet introduction to state contest this year.

The Charles City High School choir, directed by Derek Sturtevant, received a Division 1 rating Thursday afternoon at the first state contest the group has participated in.

“Couldn’t be more proud!” Sturtevant wrote in a social media post announcing the news.

The 16-member choir performed for judges at Maquoketa Valley High School on Thursday afternoon. They will travel to the group’s next festival in April.

Until then, Floyd County residents can catch Rhymes with Orange and the school’s second vocal jazz ensemble, 2 Jazzed Up, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, for a concert at North Grand Auditorium, or with the Charles City jazz bands at Jivin’ with Jazz at 6 p.m. March 27 at Trinity United Methodist Church.
