The Charles City Middle School construction project has contractors working together throughout the building to keep things clipping along.

“A lot of these contractors have worked together before and built relationships,” Estes Construction Project Manager Mike Tharp, said.

Because these relationships have already been built, the contractors are able to easily coordinate so as to keep the project moving.

“Everyone is excited,” Tharp said. “They are sprinting.”

Tharp was eager to list all of the things that have changed since the Press’ last visit to the site.

“Seventy percent of the masonry is done…SIPS panels for the gymnasium completely installed, 75 percent of the roof is done,” he said. According to Tharp, plumbing and electrical are also well underway.

The project is divided into three sections: classroom, gymnasium and commons area. Contractors began with the classroom portion have worked their way through the project from gym to commons. As Estes works to finishing enclosing the gym and commons, more workers will move in to begin work on the exterior of the classroom.

“We’ll start getting the building sided the end of February or early March,” Tharp estimated. Drywall and windows are also making their way into more portions of the building.

Despite the inclimate weather, workers have been diligent to keep the project on schedule.

“There were 35 people here working Monday,” Tharp said, talking about the activity on the second floor of the classroom building. “I’m not the least bit worried about making our date.”
