“…38, 39, 40, 41…” fifth graders and kindergartners could be heard counting all throughout Washington Elementary School Thursday afternoon. The two grade levels were paired together to celebrate the 100th day of school.

Stations were set up in the kindergarten classrooms, in the hallway and in the cafeteria. Making fruit loop necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal, seeing how far around the building 100 steps would take them, hopping 100 times and tossing a bean bag 100 passes were just a few of the activities enjoyed. The pairing of fifth grade students and kindergartners made the 100th day extra special.

“(Fifth grade students) are guiding our kindergartners and helping with counting,” Carrie Eiklenborg, kindergarten teacher, said.

Acting as counting guides gave fifth graders an opportunity to be role models.

“I see a side of them shine I haven’t seen,” Amanda Rahmiller, fifth grade teacher, said. “They are patient and kind. It’s nice to see.”
