Marketing, politics, fun as seen by first and second graders

Explore the world from your child’s point of view. The Charles City Press wanted to know what elementary students’ thoughts about things that regularly affect our community. April is Child Abuse Prevention awareness month. In an effort to bring to light the very serious reality of child abuse the Floyd County Child Abuse Prevention Council has suggested 30 ways for parents to promote child well-being. Each day in April has a different suggestion to help parents and guardians connect with their children.

As with anyone, adult or child, understanding perspective plays a major role in developing and strengthening relationships. Today, the FCCAPC recommends all those who have children in their lives to take a moment to explore the world from a child’s point of view.

We asked a handful of students to give us their opinions on their principal, leisure activities of their teachers, what kind of stores Charles City needs and politics. Here is what they had to say:

1) What is the principal’s job?

  • Principal’s job is to make sure everyone’s safe. — Hunter Boehmer, first grade
  • To make sure kids are nice to each other. — Ayla McCabe, first grade
  • The principal’s job is walking in the hallways and making sure everybody is doing the right things. — Blake Dean, second grade
  • She takes care of people…and compliments if they are being good. — Gehrig Tibbitts, second grade
  • She takes care of children when they are having a bad time and helps them with work and makes them feel better. — Addyson Vance, second grade

All of the interviewed students agree, Washington Elementary Principal Kara Shannon is very good at being the principal.

2) What do your teachers do for fun?

  • Take us on trips. — McCabe
  • Let us go out for recess. — Boehmer
  • They probably have fun teaching us, maybe and have fun with their kids. — Lillyan  Kapping, second grade
  • Maybe go out with girlfriends, if they have any, and go out for parties and stuff like that. — Zachary Sonne, second grade
  • Do math, maybe. — Vance

3) What store or restaurant would you open in Charles City?

  • A bacon store, because I love bacon. — Liam Gates, first grade
  • I would open up a thing for elderlies. They need help too. — Kapping
  • A tattoo shop. — Dean
  • A mall with maybe some roller coasters and some stores. — Vance
  • Do we have a candy store? A candy store, (with) all kinds candy. I like peppermint patties. — Sonne

4) What kind of person do you think the president of the United States should be?

  • Like my tiny sister. She’s nice, she’s kind, she’s happy and she’s nice to everyone. — McCabe.
  • A kind person and a nice person. Somebody that would help the world be a more greener place. Everytime we go outside for recess…I look on the ground and pick up garbage and stuff. — Kapping
  • An honest person that never lies. — Dean
  • Smart, and know how to fight and take down ISIS and stuff. — Sonne
  • A nice person. — Tibbitts
