Chucktown Fiesta to celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Staff report

The Chucktown Fiesta returns this Friday at the Columbus Club, and is offering something for everyone to recognize the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

Hosted by the Community Revitalization Committee, this will be the third year for the event, which started in 2012 and was put on pause until spring 2015. A raffle, live gift auction and several fiesta games are on the night’s agenda, including the night’s piñata event. Plaza Mexico is offering guests the chance to build their own tacos or nacho dish, and Dos Equis beer is on tap from Derailed. A collectible pint glass is also provided with each ticket, Events Coordinator Erica Wipperling said.

“Something new this year is a selfie frame, so we’re going to have that. People can tweet #CCFiesta and look at other posts,” Wipperling said. “It’s a really good committee that’s running it.”

Organizers are selling a limited number of tickets for $25 each, and have ordered 175 of the pint glasses, Wipperling said. Last year, the event attracted about 130 people.

“You get great food, great games and there’s free sangria,” Wipperling said.

Rumor has it the sangria’s not to be missed, Wipperling added, based off of a recipe the committee members put together in 2015.

“I heard that was really good last year,” she said. “It was just a little improv recipe, but they said it was really good so I’m excited to try it this year.”

Tickets are sold at the Charles City Chamber of Commerce office or on the night of the event, depending on availability.
