Charles City High School student Breuklyn Opp has spent four years working hard and studying. Her diligence has paid off as not only was she named a National Merit Award semi-finalist, but she was recently selected as an Academic All State student — one of the top ten students in Iowa.

Opp earned an ACT score of 35 and, according to the Des Moines Register, is ranked first in her class of 106 students with a 4.0 GPA. Opp hasn’t completely decided on a major, but is leaning toward industrial design. After touring University of Oklahoma, she decided her future aspirations would best be met at Iowa State.

“Iowa State is just a great school for design,” she said. “Actually, their architecture program, at least a couple years ago, was ranked sixth in the nation.”

Opp was also impressed with Iowa State’s career placement statistics.

“I had actually looked at studio art for a little bit, even their studio art placement was like 97 percent,” she said.

According to Opp, her first year at Iowa State will be spent taking general education courses. Completion of these courses will determine her acceptance into the industrial design program.

“You don’t actually have a guarantee to be accepted into their program,” she said.

Opp will take the first year to decide her course of study.

“I think I’ll get a double major, not quite sure, possibly in environmental science,” she said.

The classroom is not the only place Opp has excelled. Her passion combined with her work ethic and drive has also enabled her to great things in the art studio. She has regularly shown pieces at various art shows and has twice made her own prom dress.

Opp will graduate with a handful of scholarships at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 29.
