Community recovery organization to meet April 20

A small group of Charles City volunteers are fostering ideas of new resources for Floyd County residents caught up in drug addiction and alcoholism.

Nine volunteers met at Jordan River on Thursday to establish a new committee connecting those in long-term recovery to a variety of treatment and support options. The story of addiction has a personal touch to many who showed up at the group, whether they have worked with people recovering, are in recovery themselves or have family members navigating recovery.

The meeting was a follow-up from a pitch Charley Thomson made to Rev. Debra Lincoln, Bob Lincoln and Denny Raab in February: what could Floyd County do to raise recovery rates for people? Would anyone be interesting in forming a committee on this?

It turns out, people are willing to go to work for a new potential resource center. Committee members spent time on Thursday scheduling both weekly meetings and the first monthly, public meeting on April 20, 1:30 p.m. in Jordan River on Main Street. More community residents are encouraged to come and share their comments or concerns regarding recovery options in the county.

“What I find remarkable is how little long-term recovery people get with meth,” Thomson noted on Thursday.

As well as establishing committee meetings, Raab shared his experience at the Des Moines workshop “Recovery Community Organization Development,” put on by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The workshop encouraged participants to establish resource centers for addicts or those recovering, offering a central contact or location to find various support groups, treatment options and social connections with other people rebuilding their social lives around sobriety.

“Be a part of this. If you know others with a passion for recovery and are interested, bring them along,” Rev. Lincoln said.
