By popular vote, this year’s Golden Ladle goes to Levi Klinkel, chili chef and participant in the 2018 Chili Cook-Off on Friday afternoon.

Klinkel, who was sponsored by the Pub on the Cedar, was one of seven chefs participating in the 22nd annual event. He cooked the chili that was labeled No. 7.

In second place was Ted Smalley, sponsored by Hy-Vee, who cooked chili No. 1; and in third place was Carol Voyna Johnson, sponsored by Floyd County Medical Center, who cooked chili No. 5.

Seven samples of chili were served up in numbered cups and diners voter on their favorite. About 150 people took part at the Knights of Columbus building on Clark Street. Charles City High School students in the Comet Cafe and Prostart classes provided desserts.

“We had a lot of comments that all of the chilis were really good, but all of the chilis were really different,” said Emily Garden, events coordinator at the Charles City Chamber of Commerce. “You can create so many different recipes from chili, and so many different takes. We were really lucky to have a lot of chefs come out.”

“We had a lot of repeat attendees, who told us they’ve come many years in a row and really enjoy it,” she said.

Participants in this year’s Great Chili Cook-Off were The Comet Bowl, Dave’s Restaurant sponsored by Cambrex, Hy-Vee, The Pub on the Cedar, Dugan’s Restaurant and Lounge, Derailed and the Floyd County Medical Center.
