Charles City school district asks for input from the public regarding superintendent search

The Charles City School District is looking for community feedback to help with the search for a new school superintendent.

The district is asking people in Charles City to fill out a survey to give the Board of Education a better idea of what the community wants it to look for in a new school chief. The survey is an attempt to better involve the general public in the search, in order to help “provide direction for this important leadership position.”

“The search will begin immediately and conclude with the hire of a new successful leader,” the school district announced in a public release. “Your feedback regarding what desired qualifications are most important for this position will ensure the hire is a good fit for our school district.”

The survey is available on the school district’s website, charlescityschools.org. Click on “District News.” The survey will end Thursday, April 19.

Among other items, the survey asks for thoughts as to what professional skills and personal qualities community members hope a new superintendent will have, what the school district’s strengths and challenges are, and it even gives people an opportunity to offer advice to the new superintendent.

After five years as superintendent at Charles City, Dan Cox recently announced his resignation in order to accept a new position as chief administrator of the Northwest Area Education Agency, based in Sioux City. His resignation will take effect on June 30.

The Charles City school board hired Grundmeyer Leader Search to support the search for a new district superintendent at a special meeting last Monday.

Grundmeyer, based in Ankeny, offered a five-step plan in its proposal, with a tentative timeline that selects a new superintendent by the estimated date of May 16.

The timeline includes an application period through the end of April, reviewing candidate pools by May 7, screening candidates by May 10, and formal interviews with the finalists on May 16. The firm also said in its proposal that it will work with the new superintendent through July 1 to help the selected candidate establish an entry into the school district.

Grundmeyer estimates a total cost of a full search at about $10,000, although the firm said the district may choose to conduct some steps in the search on its own, and in that case, the cost will be reduced accordingly.
