Dangerous cold Friday, snow possible Sunday, even colder midweek

By Bob Steenson, bsteenson@charlescitypress.com

A wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon Friday as temperatures that feel like 35 below zero are caused by winds that were predicted to gust as high as 40 mph.

The high for Friday is expected to be about 5 degrees, but the strong winds could drive the wind chill temperatures well into double digits below zero Friday morning.

The National Weather Service advised travelers to plan for some snow-covered roads due to wind-driven drifting, and blowing snow could also significantly affect visibility, sometimes suddenly.

“The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” NWS said. “Make sure you wear a warm hat and gloves.”

The cold will continue Friday night, with a low of 8 degrees below zero and wind chills that feel like 17 below zero.

Another potential winter storm is on the horizon for Sunday night and Monday.

Several inches of snow are possible beginning after noon Sunday, with the highest chances for heavy snow in a band that includes Charles City, according to the latest forecast available Thursday evening.

“It is a little too early to nail down the exact details on snow amounts as the system could shift north or south,” the National Weather Service said. “Monitor forecasts closely the next few days. Plan now for possible travel impacts Sunday night through Monday.”

Even more dangerously cold wind chills are expected in the middle of next week.

The “feels-like” temperature could dip as low as 40 below to 50 below zero next Wednesday and Thursday morning, the NWS said.

“Dangerous and possibly record cold could impact the region next week,” the weather service said. “Now is the time to prepare for these conditions.”
