Merlin Obermeier, 79, of Clarksville, formerly of Charles City, passed away Oct. 20, 2015, at the Floyd County Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend David Schatz from St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery following the Mass. Visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City from 5-8p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, and will continue an hour prior to the Mass on Friday at the church. Merlin Louis Obermeier, the son of Joseph and Lillian (Hurst) Obermeier, was born on Sept. 14, 1936, in Charles City. He attended Charles City Country School and graduated from Charles City High School. Merlin was united in marriage to Mary Miller on June 2, 1956, in Rockford. He was born and raised in Charles City until moving to Clarksville in 2004. Merlin devoted 36 years of his life at White Farm, farmed north of Charles City until 1976, and then continued to help other farmers. He also worked as a custodian at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church until 1998.

Merlin was a very active member at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, built birdhouses and other woodcrafts, and would sit for hours watching westerns. Merlin enjoyed playing blackjack at the casino with his favorite dealers. He loved spending quality time with his family and friends, and taking walks with his trusted sidekick, Benji. Merlin was best known for always speaking his mind.

Living family members include his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Obermeier of Clarksville; nine children: Russell (Raeanne) Obermeier of New Hampton, Joey (Penny) Obermeier of Charles City, Brenda (Tom) Marpe of Charles City, Sheryl (Howie) McGinnis of Gilroy, Calif., Kimberly (Joe) Mullaney of Le Grand, Jacqueline (Dean) Hennick of Charles City, Melonie (Bob) Welter of Rockford, Shelly (Arlyn) Wood of Rudd, and Trisha (Todd) Dobson of Le Grand; 33 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; brothers-in-law: Robert Hoeft of Charles City, John (Barb) Miller of Rockford, and Kenny Miller of Tucson, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Laverne Obermeier; sister, Leone Lore; twin sister, Merna Hoeft; and three grandchildren: Jeffrey, Amanda, and Melissa. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Immaculate Conception Tuition Scholarship and-or Animal Rescue League.
