Dorothy Putney

Dorothy Putney, 89, of Charles City, passed away Friday, March 9, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service for Dorothy Putney will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Hauser Funeral Home with Sister Diana Blong from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, with a Scripture Service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Dorothy Lucile Putney, the daughter of Leonard and Gretchen (Boyce) Ranney, was born July 22, 1928, in Franklin County, Iowa. On July 27, 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to Lyle Brakel in Princeton, Missouri. This union was blessed with six children. The couple later divorced.

On Oct. 19, 1959, Dorothy married Richard “Dick” Putney. They made their home in Floyd where they continued to raise their family which included three more children. Dorothy was a cook at various places including the Floyd County Home, Comet Bowl and the Immaculate Conception Rectory. She was also a waitress at Shrivers Sundry. Dorothy loved being a special education teacher’s aide for Cindy Noah’s class and continued her love of helping children as a Foster Grandparent for 14 years.

Dorothy was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary where she had served twice as president. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, playing BINGO, playing cards at the Senior Center, baking pies (which she sold) and spending time with her family (especially her grandchildren). Dorothy also had fun traveling to Japan, Germany, England and Italy.

Living family members include her children: Linda (Jim) Lantz of Rudd, Dean (Joy) Brakel of Merritt Island, Florida, Michael Brakel (Liz Burens) of Britt, Patricia (Jeff) Sommerlot of Marshalltown, Barb Boullion of Charles City, Bonnie (Jim) Calkins of Caldwell, Idaho and Mary (Rick) Steere of Greene; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Brakel of Charles City; 26 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Joanne) Ranney of Nora Springs; special friend, her Miniature Schnauzer, Andy; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons: Larry and Dennis Brakel; son-in-law, Louie Boullion; brother in infancy; and nephew, David Ranney.
