Valeda Rita Lines was born June 30, 1927, on the family farm near Waucoma, IA, in rural Fayette County. She was the daughter of William H. and Ethel J. (Whitnable) Winkelman. Valeda attended rural country school near Alpha and Fredericksburg and finished schooling just east of Nashua at the East Greenwood School near Republic. She then worked for several years at a New Hampton poultry plant. On October 25, 1944, she married Don Hunt and to this union two daughters were born, Donna Mae and Gloria Jean. The couple later divorced. On March 4, 1954, in Austin, MN, she married Kenneth Leo Lines and to this union a son Paul was born.

Valeda and Kenny raised their family in the country. Initially they farmed near Plainfield until settling on their current home place, east of Nashua, in 1957. Valeda farmed side-by-side with her husband helping with all the chores and tending to the needs of her family. They continued to help their son Paul on the farm until the mid eighties. Kenneth died on March 29, 2010 at the age of 93. Valeda enjoyed the outdoors in the summer, working in her garden and did many jig-saw puzzles during the cold months. She also played many games of cards and marbles, but mostly loved the time she could spend with her family.
