Samuel ‘Sam’ Hake

Samuel “Sam” Hake, 17, of Nashua, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 as a junior at Nashua-Plainfield High School. He was a registered organ donor.

A funeral service for Samuel will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with Pastor Jim Beranek officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2018 and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Samuel Michael Hake was born Feb. 12, 2001. The fourth child of Theresa and Timothy Hake, Samuel grew up at the family home in rural Ionia, Iowa. A homeschooled child until the age of 13, Sam was a happy, joyful boy who loved playing outdoors with his siblings, biking, and all things to do with wheels. Sam made friends easily, and his memorable, friendly smile won the hearts of many. As a little boy, Sam enjoyed a close relationship with his siblings, and his family shared many activities together, such as day trips, the daily routine of schoolwork, and a rural lifestyle. During his early years, Samuel participated in several home schooling groups, and his childhood Sunday school experiences included Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg and Little Brown Church in Nashua. Sam was baptized as an infant at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, where as a teen, he later attended church with his mother and his sister Olivia, participating in youth activities and Chancel Choir. Having taken piano lessons as a child, Samuel was a gifted percussionist and participated in band and vocal music both at Charles City and at Nashua-Plainfield High Schools. A member of the Nashua Bradford Eager Beavers 4-H Club, Sam was honored with many state fair level winning projects, including playing piano at the Iowa State Fair. As an older teen, Samuel attended Nashua-Plainfield High School and participated in sports such as cross country, basketball, and track. He was also active in high school Vocal and Band, receiving many honors. Sam, who excelled at school subjects such as shop and woodworking, was exploring college career programs involving technical skills. Sam’s lifelong neighbors, church family, and friends of all ages remember his quick smile and friendly, generous personality as his most memorable qualities, freely giving of his time and helping others in need.

Samuel is survived by his mother, Theresa Hake; father and step-mother, Timothy and Lori Hake; his three siblings: Hannah, Olivia and Caleb; three step-siblings: Jaymi, Hayli and Lexi Crozier. Other survivors include his niece, Harmony; nephew, Oliver; and brother-in-law, Allen Pederson. Sam is survived by his paternal grandparents, Barbara and Roger Hake of South Bend, Indiana; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; as well as his step-grandmother Marilyn DeZwarte of Knoxville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Roberta and Erwin Barkalow of Creston, Iowa.
