Letter to the Editor: Seeking musical members for municipal band

By The Charles City Municipal Band Board of Directors, Charles City

To all area instrumentalists:

The Charles City Municipal Band invites you to join us for a summer of fun during our 37th season. We welcome everyone in the whole family. Bring mom, dad, the kids or grandkids for a unique opportunity to make music together.

Don’t have an instrument? Give one of the board members or directors a call, and we’ll help you find one to use.

Charles City’s Municipal Band dates back to the Iowa Band Law, which allowed a tax to provide a community band. We had municipal bands back before most of us can remember, and in its most recent incarnation we’ve been around since 1981.

If you are interested in playing with us, please come to our first rehearsal on Wednesday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Charles City High School band room. Our rehearsals will be over by 9 p.m. Bring a friend or family member with you to get in on the fun!

Jake Gassman, director of bands from Charles City High School, will conduct the June 3 concert. Scott Stroud, director of bands from Nashua-Plainfield High School, will conduct the final two concerts.

Our concerts will be held in Central Park, except for the Fourth of July concert, which will be behind the Charles City Public Library prior to the fireworks.

All rehearsals will be at the Charles City High School.

Here is a list of rehearsals and concert dates:

• May 23 and May 30 rehearsals (7:30 p.m.); June 3 concert (7:30 p.m.).

• June 6 and June 13 rehearsals (7:30 p.m.); June 17 concert (7:30 p.m.).

• June 20 and June 27 rehearsals (7:30 p.m.); July 4 patriotic concert (7:30 p.m.).

Please send your name and what instrument you play, plus what rehearsals and concerts you can attend, to Jake Gassman, Charles City High School, 1 Comet Drive, Charles City, IA 50616, before the first rehearsal on May 23. We hope to see you then!
