Ronnei: A few degrees can make the world of difference

Fischer Ronnei, grandson of Nub Ronnei, reeled in 16 catfish and one northern. According to Nub, Fischer had a few more nice catfish on the line that got away. Over the course of the fishing weekend, Fischer was able to take home roughly 30 pounds of catfish fillets. Contributed photo

The sunshine on Monday didn’t last long enough for anglers.

“Guys just don’t want to go out and fish in this stuff,” Tim Eppley, owner of Tim’s Bait & Tackle, said.

Nub Ronnei, owner of Nub’s Bait, Tackle & More agreed.

“It doesn’t take much to effect the fish; a few degrees can make the world of difference,” he said. “A lot of it affects the people too.”

Temperamental weather conditions are not surprising this time year of year Iowa.

“That’s spring,” Eppley said. “I’ve seen some terrible Memorial Days.”

Though April and May are not reliable when it comes to ideal fishing weather, it won’t be long until sunshine and clear waters are here.

“(Anglers) think ‘I’m not going there’s nicer days coming,’” Ronnei said. He tends to agree and looks forward to turn toward more favorable weather.

Tim’s Bait & Tackle is located on F Street in Charles City.

Nub’s Bait, Tackle & More can be found in Nashua.
