Rockford’s Staudt an all-stater

Lady Warrior senior selected to INA Class 2A third team

Staff Report

Free throws may not be the most exciting action in basketball.

That may be one reason why free throw-shooting contests have yet to be included in the NBA All-Star Weekend.

The Rockford girls basketball team may not have been too concerned about the entertainment value of free throws, but it found ways to get to the line, nonetheless — the Lady Warriors 432 “throws” this season.

Senior Emma Staudt shot 109 of them, and she made 83 for a respectable 76.1 percentage. Not only did that help her lead the Lady Warriors in scoring (14.8 ppg), but Staudt — with fellow senior Madison McGregor who led the team with 124 free throws — consistently inflicted opposing front lines with foul trouble while often helping Rockford get in the bonus well before the second and fourth quarters.

Those are among the reason why the Lady Warriors were 20-4 this year and advanced as far as the Class 2A regional finals.

Staudt also led team in steals (88), and was second to McGregor in rebounds with 151 total boards.

This week, the Iowa Newspaper Association honored Staudt when placing her on its Class 2A Girls Basketball All-State third team.

Staudt reached several milestones her final season with the Lady Warriors — 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 200 assists.

She will continue her basketball career at Winthrop University, a Division 1 program in Rock Hill, S.C.
