Comets compete in final indoor meet of the season

DECORAH — The Charles City girls 1,600-meter distance medley relay team won its event at the Northeast Iowa Conference Track and Field Meet held Tuesday at Luther College.

The winning time was 4 minutes, 36.37 seconds. Not bad considering the conditions.

Indoors.

“They ran real well,” Charles City girls head coach Doug Bohlen said of the winning quartet of (in race-leg order) Tayler Schmidt, Sami Heyer, Katie Foster and Whitney Martin), “especially in a place like here.

“The lanes are narrow and the turns are real tight. There’s not much room to run good times in here. That’s why I’m extremely pleased that a lot of our times came down from last meet.”

Foster, who was the Class 2A 200-meter dash runner-up at the state meet as a sophomore before sitting out last season while recovering from knee surgery, won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.76 seconds.

Martin, who ran the 800-meter final leg of the distance medley, placed second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 23 seconds.

The indoor atmosphere at Regents Center — Luther’s indoor track — also didn’t adversely affect Charles City senior thrower Sara Martin, who won the shot put event with a personal-best throw of 38 feet, 11 inches.

“We think that may have a good chance at getting her to Drake,” Bohlen said of the possibility of his returning state-qualifier attaining the standard to participate in the prestigious spring track meet at Drake University.

With Decorah’s Hailey Nierling throwing 34 feet, 8 ½ inches for second, Charles City junior Sydney Loeckle placed third with a throw of 33 feet, 3 ½ inches.

In the girls high jump, Comet senior Sierra Walker matched Ellec Armstead of Waukon with a clear of 4 feet, 10 inches, the highest mark of all competitors. Armstead cleared the height in fewer attempts, thus was deemed the event winner.

“One of Sierra’s goals was to jump 5 feet,” Bohlen said, “and she’s almost there and we’re not even outdoors, yet.”

The conference meet was the third and final indoor meet Charles City’s boys and girls teams have competed in this late winter-early spring. Both squads open the outdoor portion of the season on Tuesday (March 28) at a meet at Waverly-Shell Rock.

“We’re excited of what we’ve seen so far,” Charles City boys head coach Ryan Rahmiller said. “We’re learning a lot more about ourselves, and we’ve some nice splits [timed segments of runs] today.”

As he done in the previous two indoor meets, Charles City long jumper Brandon Bluhm recorded a flight of better than 20 feet while winning his event with a leap of 20 feet, 1 ½ inches.

Charles City’s versatile senior runner Adam Stewart, a former state qualifier in cross country, proved that he can also sprint when needed as his 25.10-seconds time in the 200 was good enough for a conference indoor title.

“Adam really surprised us today,” Rahmiller said of Stewart, who is bounding back from a series of illnesses that thwarted his cross country and track junior seasons last year.

Charles City junior Gavin Connell, who is a three-time cross country state qualifier, placed second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 24.23 seconds. Tyler O’Neill of Waukon placed first (10:21.08).

“That was a great race to watch,” Rahmiller said of the 3,200.
