OSAGE — Having to compete in two meets at once last week, Charles City’s girls track team had to split its squad.

Consequently, the Comets’ had to shuffle the lineup of their “A” 4-by-100 shuttle hurdle relay.

During the Osage Girls Invitational on Tuesday, the Charles City’s shuttle squad of Brianna Carey, Tayler Schmidt, Lynn Hoeft and Sadie Ruzicka was back together — the foursome was fabulous as they set a meet record with a time of 1 minute, 11.22 seconds.

“It’s not a school record,” Charles City head coach Darren Bohlen said in reference to CC’s 2015 state shuttle team that included Carey and Ruzicka when they were sophomores.

“But it’s the best time of the season so far,” Bohlen said. “A lot of good things came together for us tonight.”

For Charles City senior Katie Foster, who also had a good 2015 state meet as a sophomore with a second-place finish in the 200, it was business as usual as she won both the 100 and 200 dashes with respective times of 12.99 and 26.60.

Earlier, Foster and Ruzicka teamed up with underclassmen Sami Heyer and Alex Litterer to win the 800 sprint medley relay.

For the Comets, it proved to be a good start that led to a strong finish as they won the 10-team meet with a first-place team total of 122 points.

Midway through the meet, Charles City was tied with Osage and Crestwood. But after the throwing events were tabulated, the Comets took the lead for good.

The hosting Green Devils were second (113 team points) and Crestwood placed a distant third (98).

In the shot put, Charles City senior Sara Martin avenged an earlier meet loss to North Butler’s Nicole Heeren with a first-place throw of 38 feet, 8 inches. Heeren finished second (38-06.75) ahead of Rockford’s Skylar Schmitt (36-04) and Comet junior Sydney Loeckle (35-09).

In the discus, Loeckle threw a person-best 112 feet, 7 ½ inches, which was good enough for second place. Martin placed third (104-06.5). Saint Ansgar’s Mariah Hulshizer won the discus with a throw of 126 feet, 10 inches.

For the most part, the Comets sealed the meet with a one-two finish in the 800 run.

Charles City senior Bailey Mitchell won the race with a time of 2:34.12 ahead of runner-up teammate Gillian King (2:37.34).

“Our distance runners are battling injuries right now,” said Bohlen, who had to rest some of his top runners, but still got third- and fourth-place finishes from senior Sarah Turpen respectively in the 3,000 and 1,500 runs.

“And Bailey is one of them,” Bohlen said. “But she loves to run … she loves to compete, so we let her run the 800, and she’s been doing a great job for us.

“But we’ve got to watch her and rein her in. We want her to get healthy.”
